Objective:

The main purpose of this proposal is to extend the use of the newly discovered Non -Faradaic Electrochemical Modification of Catalytic Activity (NEMCA) effect in catalysis to source reduction and waste remediation. In addition, a self adjusting catalytic reactor will be developed by incorporating gas sensor technology in the reactor system. An additional task is to codevelop the capillary electrophoresis methodology to examine the acid intermediates of the resulting advanced oxidation processes. This will allow the analysis of the troublesome intermediates in advanced oxidation processes applied to real hazardous wastes and the products of NIMCA catalysis. To date the NEMCA effect has been observed for complete oxidation, partial oxidation, and hydrogenation/ dehydrogenation reactions. NEMCA has not been explored for oxidative detoxification, base catalyzed dehalogenation or reductive dehalogenation. The time is now ripe for exploitation of this technology for environmental and hazardous waste catalysis. NEMCA involves the use of solid electrolytes as active catalyst supports to induce dramatic and reversible changes in the properties of catalytically active metals and metal oxides. This is accomplished by applying small voltages ( 1-2V) between the conductive active phase and a counter electrode across the ion conductive support, where the effect of increasing voltage is to promote the active catalyst. The work function of the catalyst surface can be changed from low to high as ions such as O~ increase in concentration on the active catalyst. This dramatically affects the catalyst activity. Other promoting ions (o2ÄÄ, ~, Na', H~) can be supplied in situ and reversibly on the active catalysis surface (CE) at progressively higher polarization. The induced increase in catalytic rate is up to 1000 times larger than the regular, unpromoted rate and up to 3x105 larger than the rate of promoting ion supply. This new phenomenon, known as NEMCA is permitting a systematic and controllable variation of promotion in heterogeneous catalysis. The specific objectives in this proposal are: 1) to assemble the NEMCA reactor system, 2) test the system with CO oxidation, 3) extend the NEMCA process to NOx reduction and 4) to explore the technologies for use for halocarbon reductive dehalogenation. In the process of fulfillment of these goals, a fifth and very important objective is to bring this technology to fruition, bring it out of the laboratory and to the demonstration stage. Along the way, effective technology transfer will involve the interaction with industry to focus the project on realistic hazardous waste treatment goals.

Approach:

The research plans involve three phases starting with the assembly of the NEMCA GAS RECYCLE REACTOR SYSTEM with sample extraction and GC analysis. The NEMCA reactor consists of an ion conductive support tube closed at one end with conductive support and at the other with a water cooled metal reactor cap with gas feed and extraction lines. The catalyst surface is on the inside of the support tube. A counter electrode CE and a reference electrode RE are on the other side of the reactor and are exposed to a promoter such as oxygen. The ZrO2-Y2O3,(O2 conductor) system will be explored first. The reaction system will be tested first with CO oxidation and then will be used for NOx reduction experiments. The NOx reduction experiments will be followed by reductive dehalogenation of halocarbons. Both the ZrO2-Y2O3,(0~~ conductor) and ~"-Al2O3,( H~) electrolytes will be examined for the NOx reduction and reductive dehalogenation, respectively. In this phase of the work, the gas sensor ~ ill be integrated into the reactor as well. The final phase will involve the development and optimization of one or more bench scale gas recycle NEMCA reactor systems for hazardous waste decomposition or source reduction. These units will be used for demonstration Or successful processes.

Expected Results:

The project on completion will develop a new self controlling catalytic reactor process based on combining NEMCA and Gas Sensor technology. A new catalytic process for NOx reduction will be developed and a new catalytic process for halocarbon dehalogenation will be brought to fruition as well as the CE analytical methodology to study the intermediates.
