The objective of this research project is to experimentally investigate: (1) the effect of chelating ligands on the adsorption of cobalt(III) and chromium(III) onto transition metal (iron, titanium) oxides; and (2) the effect of chelating ligands on the oxidation of chromium(III) to the hexavalent state by manganese oxides.


Complexes of cobalt(III) and chromium(III) with (amino)carboxylate chelating agents will be synthesized according to methods reported in the literature. Methods for the analysis of these complexes will be developed using capillary electrophoresis (CE). The adsorption of the cobalt(III) and chromium(III) complexes will be studied on transition metal oxides. The mechanism for adsorption also will be investigated by slightly altering the structure of the metal complex.

Expected Results:

It is expected that the oxidation of chromium(III) by manganese oxide will occur at high pH as a result of its increased solubility. Also, the rates of oxidation are expected to vary greatly as a result of these ligands.
