The proposed anaerobic digestion process improvement will provide a means to separate anaerobic bacteria from the digester supernatant and recycle those bacteria to the anaerobic reactor. The process improvement will thus allow for the maintenance of high concentrations of anaerobic bacteria within the reactor. Solids retention times are expected to be increased substantially. As a result, the hydraulic reten- don time is expected to be considerably reduced. This research will investigate alternative methods of separating anaerobic bacteria from digester supernatant.
