Millions of gas fired residential and commercial water heaters are installed nationwide. Uncontrolled NOx emissions from these units are high, relative to industrial low NOx burner emissions. New low cost approaches to control NOx are needed, to limit emission from water heaters.

Altex Technologies Corporation through analyses and testing has shown the feasibility of the Low Emissions Water Heater Burner (LEWHB) to reduce NOx below 20 Ng/J, a burner incremental cost of less than $0.4. The burner incorporates conventional burner components and can be easily adapted to existing water heaters. Besides low burner cost, the LEWHB lowers stack temperature and increases heater efficiency. The resulting fuel savings more then offsets the burner costs. Under the Phase II effort, Altex, with assistance of a major burner manufacturer, will refine the LEWHB to a commercializable design, and test the burner at threes different water heater capacities. Burner cost data will also be refined, to fully quantify the economic benefits of the LEWHB. Lastly a commercialization plan for the LEWHB will be prepared.
