Millions of gas fired residential and commercial water heaters are installed nationwide. Uncontrolled NOx emissions from these units are high relative to industrial low NOx burner emissions. California and other states have implemented regulations to control NOx from these units. However, due to water heater cost and available electrical power constraints, NOx emission regulation levels have remained high. To bring emissions more into line with industrial sources, new low cost and unpowered approaches to NOx control are needed to limit emissions from water heaters.

Altex, using analyses and fundamental test results, has identified the Low Emissions Water Heater Burner (LEWHB) that has the potential to achieve low NOx at low cost. The burner incorporated conventional burner fuel/air supply and mixing for safety, durability and adaptability to existing water heaters. Several low NOx approaches are integrated into the LEWHB to achieve emission levels of 10ng/J at low cost. To show the feasibility of this burner under the Phase I program, a LEWHB burner will be fabricated and tested in a fully instrumented residential water heater. The results of the tests, along with cost information, will be used to evaluate the benefits of this burner relative to conventional and alternative low NOx burners for water heaters.
