Description:

The importance of particulate removal from contaminated gas streams is illustrated in numerous publications showing a strong correlation between human health and ambient air quality. To better evaluate and control the performance of particulate removal systems, accurate, direct and dependable continuous particulate concentration monitors are needed. Current continuous monitoring technologies rely either on indirect or intermittent sampling methods. However, none of the current methods can measure both directly and continuously. The proposed research involves a unique and innovative Direct Continuous Particulate Monitor (DCPM) for the measurement of particulates in industrial or power plant flue gas streams. The DCPM's operating principal is based on a simple, reliable concentrator which allows for the direct measurement of particulate matter concentration in real time.

A laboratory-scale DCPM was constructed and tested over a wide range of conditions. Over 40 experiments were conducted in Phase I research. The results have demonstrated the feasibility of the DCPM concept. The lab unit was able to detect particulate mass concentrations as low as 1 mg/m3 (1 PPMw) with _ 5% deviation from the reference method. Phase II effort will focus on the engineering development, optimization, and life-cycle testing of a prototype DCPM unit.
