Combustion in boilers and fluids heaters consumes approximately 5 TCF of gas per year and generates approximately 350,000 tons of NOx. To meet ambient air quality standards, particularly those for ozone, low-cost ultralow NOx burners are needed for these applications. This will reduce costs and increase the competitiveness of U.S. industry that might otherwise be forced to use the expensive Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) NOx control techniques.

Altex has identified an ultralow NOx burner for boilers and fluid heaters called the ULNB. Phase I 2MMBtu/hr ULNB tests have shown the potential of the burner to reduce NOx to be low 9 ppm, over a turndown ratio of eight-to-one, and with good combustion conditions. The burner is projected to reduce the cost to remove a ton of NOx by 80 percent, relative to alternative low NOx burners, and 96 percent, relative to SCR. To demonstrate performance and economic benefits of this burner under the Phase II program, a 20 MMBtu/hr ULNB will be fabricated and then tested in an industrial boiler. Results of analyses and testing will be used to evaluate the burner performance and costs, relative to other low NOx burners and SCR.
