Objective:This community-based epidemiologic research will compare ambient and indoor exposures to a variety of antigens in the home and ambient environment to children's morbidity from asthma. This study will provide the first interaction of the Center with families in East Baltimore, and will have recruited a group of collaborating families from which to recruit an intervention trial and other projects such as genetic linkage studies. Families will be contacted through the Baltimore City elementary schools-_ A Recruitment Director will obtain approval and create the physical and administrative environment to conduct an 6 weeks asthma self-management education program (the A+ Asthma Club curriculum) into 5-10 schools each year. At the end of the curriculum, parents will again be contacted to recruit them into the baseline evaluation for the epidemiology study. The requirements and benefits of the study will be explained by the recruiters, and those who elect to participate will be given a written informed consent and scheduled for a clinic visit where we will collect demographic, medical and psychosocial questionnaires, apply allergy skin test to the child, perform a venipuncture and pulmonary function tests and collect a urine specimen. A home visit will be conducted to inspect, collect settled dust for allergens, and collect air samples for pollutants. The families will be contacted periodically by telephone to evaluate the child's asthma morbidity and activity. During the epidemiology study clinic visit and home visit, the Intervention Trial will be introduced to the family and child and they will be invited to participate.
