Description:

A technical challenge to sustainability is finding an energy source that is abundant enough to meet global demands without producing greenhouse gases or radioactive waste. Energy from ocean surface waves can provide the people of this planet a clean, endless power source to meet global demand for centuries to come. To meet this challenge, we will develop a device to harness ocean wave energy to produce electricity. The device is based on a cable reel incorporated with a buoy on the ocean surface allowing us to harness a larger range of waves than existing systems. Results will be documented during testing of physical models in a wave tank. The data processing will be scrutinized by the faculty advisors and the process will be filmed for demonstration. All of the advantages of ocean wave energy for people and the planet will be used as an educational tool at Stevens Institute of Technology.
