Description:

Atmospheric research during the past decade has highlighted the critical role that atmospheric aerosols play in both chemical and physical processes relating to air pollution and climate change. The work proposed here is specifically designed to measure the heterogeneous processing capacity of submicron size aerosols as a function of particle size. This program will combine our prior experience in studying heterogeneous chemistry of atmospheric relevance with recently developed mass spectrometric aerosol sampling techniques for size and composition analysis of submicron particles. Emphasis will be placed on measuring changes in chemical composition of submicron aerosols (40 to 1000 nm in diameter) as a function of initial aerosol composition and size. The heterogeneous chemistry of nitrogen oxide species (NOx, NOy), O3, H2O2, and HO2 will be investigated on sulfuric acid, ammonium sulfate and sea salt aerosols. The effect of hydrocarbon and/or metal ion additives will also be investigated. This work will focus on measuring product appearances in both the gas and condensed phase as well as monitoring size dependent rates of gas uptake for processes which control gas phase oxidant production and destruction in the troposphere.
