Research Category: Academic Fellowships , Environmental Justice , Fellowship - Economics
Objective:
The objective of this research project is to help nongovernmental environmental organizations assess whether a compensation package would help them achieve their goals, and, if so, how they can secure the best possible compensation package. Another objective is to synthesize natural and social science paradigms to form a unified set of analytical tools and frameworks.
Approach:
I will conduct an ex ante analysis of wetlands compensation negotiations in eastern North Carolina. The negotiation process comprises stakeholders from industry, state and local government, and state and local nonprofit organizations. The goal of the negotiation process is to secure a win-win outcome such that those institutions that are interested in wetlands development, and protection can further their agendas. The tools and approaches we develop will be of great use in future wetlands decisions when the time and cost requirements of a complete analysis are prohibitive. The entire process will have a significant impact because it demonstrates that there can be win-win outcomes in situations where most observers believed there could only be conflict. I will conduct a more formal analysis and evaluate the process in retrospect to determine how well our tools and approaches worked, and how we can improve them for future use.
