Research Category: Fellowship - Air Pollution , Academic Fellowships , Air Quality and Air Toxics
Objective:
The objectives of this research project are to: (1) characterize the spatial patterns of several different air pollutant concentration fields; (2) estimate human exposure to these pollutants; and (3) compare exposures between subpopulations.
Approach:
Geographic information systems software will be used to perform a spatial analysis of air pollutant concentration data obtained from a multipollutant modeling effort for California's South Coast Air Basin. Correlations between concentration levels and population densities will be examined. Human exposure will be assessed by calculating intake amounts using concentration, breathing rate, and time/activity/location data. Exposure differences between various demographic groups will be quantified. Improved characterization of spatial patterns in air pollutant concentrations will lead to a better understanding of how exposures are distributed within the population.
