Objective:
The main objectives of this research project are to: (1) understand the relationships between human population growth, density, and the loss of biological diversity; and (2) understand which aspects of human activity, and combinations thereof, have the greatest impact on biodiversity.
Approach:
At a site in the humid neotropics, this project will involve the comparison of the biodiversity (for certain taxa) of a protected area with the biodiversity of nearby unprotected areas of similar size and ecological characteristics, which have varying human population densities, growth rates, and distributions. Other measures of human activity also will be gathered, such as per capita income and energy use. The data will be analyzed to determine the relationships among the anthropogenic factors and the change in biodiversity. There will be a particular focus on the relationship between human population density and the number of species. However, the results of this research may have application to other tropical areas and temperate regions as well, or that it may serve as a model for similar research there.
