Objective:

The main objective of this research project is to use Lake Michigan Ozone Study (LMOS) data to inventory estimation and ozone modeling.

Approach:

The study will have three distinct phases: (1) a receptor model is used to estimate the emission inventory for specific air parcels at each sampling site; receptor models apportion ambient hydrocarbons to pollutant source categories on the basis of the known pattern of emissions from the sources; (2) in an inventory and model validation, the estimates from the receptor model are compared with the Chicago area inventory and the LMOS gridded inventory, which gives emission inventory estimates for source categories for each grid cell; the mass flux of VOCs and NOx through the urban area also will be determined using a simple box model; and (3) the receptor model emission estimates are used as input to a photochemical reaction model, which simultaneously solves the 81 Carbon Bond Mechanism IV rate equations representing ozone formation.
