Description:
The purpose of the project is to reduce pollution and environmental degradation by increasing the efficiency of energy end-uses in the industrial and household sectors of key Asian and Latin American countries. This will be accomplished by encouraging the adoption and harmonization of energy efficiency standards and labeling on a regional basis in Asia and Latin America.The rapidly expanding economies of Asia and Latin America have created a surge of demand for energy-consuming products, ranging from industrial equipment to consumer goods such as refrigerators and air conditioners. Due to a lack of minimum energy efficiency standards, most of these products are cheap and highly inefficient. This state of affairs exacerbates the regions' growing emissions of NOx, SOX, particulates and carbon dioxide. The US has considerable experience and expertise in developing energy efficiency standards and labeling, which could guide Asian and Latin American nations in establishing their own standards and labeling programs.
Principal project activities will include: forming regional Working Groups with partner organizations; helping to coordinate training sessions for laboratory personnel; identifying opportunities for regional harmonization of energy efficiency standards; and undertaking pilot projects.
Project results will include: the formation of ongoing partnerships to support the development and regional harmonization of energy efficiency standards and labeling; the building of local capacity to design and implement standards and labeling programs; and more rapid diffusion of energy-efficient technologies throughout Asia and Latin America. Avoided emissions and other environmental benefits resulting from the implemented standards and labeling programs will be estimated.
