Description:

The goal of this research project is to develop and commercialize a new generation of concrete-based wastewater infrastructure systems with substantially enhanced longevity, structural and hydrological performance, and initial and life-cycle economy. This new infrastructure would greatly reduce the cost and environmental implications of wastewater management. Concrete pipes, manholes, pump stations, interceptors, and wet walls constitute close to 40 percent of this country's multimillion dollar investment in wastewater infrastructure. Concrete pipes, which are the focus of the Phase I research project, represent almost $3 billion in annual sales in the United States. Technova Corporation's approach focuses on technological developments in concrete biochemical admixtures and fiber reinforcement systems, and emphasizes refined structural and joint designs. Technova Corporation has joined forces with major manufacturers of concrete-based components of the sewer infrastructure (who have made major commitments to the project) and their associations, as well as with Michigan State University, to accomplish the following objectives during Phase I research: (1) develop concrete mix designs with significantly enhanced resistance to microbial-induced corrosion and sulfate attack, (2) develop fiber reinforcement systems and enhance the structural efficiency of concrete pipe design, (3) assess the production and life-cycle economy of the new system design, (4) verify durability of refined concrete material systems in an actual sewer environment, and (5) develop and verify improved joint systems for the new concrete pipes.
