Objective:

The objective of this research project is to improve the generation system for laboratory-generated ultrafine carbon particles, specifically, to eliminate organic contaminants and set up a separate system for the generation of ultrafine organic particles and mixed ultrafine carbon/iron particles.

Approach:

We will conduct several animal studies, to continue work on our general hypothesis that pre-existing inflammation and old age are important priming factors to sensitize the host for subsequent pulmonary and cardiovascular effects of inhaled ultrafine particles. The in vivo endpoints to be evaluated include pulmonary inflammatory markers, analysis of blood white cell adhesion molecules, blood coagulation factors, heart rate variability, and blood pressure variability (BP).

Expected Results:

We expect to be able to extend the use of our animal models to exposures of ambient ultrafine particles and organic ultrafine carbonaceous particles.
