Objective:
The objective of this research is to identify sources and mechanisms of nutrient (phosphorus and nitrogen) transport within the urbanizing watershed by quantifying nutrient contributions of urban infrastructures to stream water quality.
Approach:
To understand phosphorus (P) dynamics within the urbanizing watershed, a small urbanized sub-watershed within the Johnson Creek basin was selected. A mass balance of P within this watershed will be developed. Hydrologic parameters, including storm drain discharges, precipitation, groundwater seepage, soil water and runoff contribution to dry wells, will be monitored and sampled for P concentrations during storm events and the dry season. Oxygen isotopes ratio (18/16) will be examined to quantify contributions of precipitation, soil water, and groundwater to the stream.
Expected Results:
This comprehensive study should provide a complete picture of hydrological passage and associated P concentrations within this urbanized watershed, and the results of this study will enhance our knowledge of urbanization effects on stream water quality.
