Description:

The purpose of this project is to develop and carry out field demonstration of electroactive polymer-based biosensing systems utilizing microelectrode arrays and individually addressable sensing chips in a multi-analyte sensing format for environmental analysis. The studies will focus on the design, synthesis and complete characterization of antibody and enzyme-modified macroelectrodes using electrochemical, spectroscopic, and surface microscopic techniques. Practical application studies probing the interactions between the modified electrodes and priority environmental compounds, particularly those predominant in groundwater and air pollution assessments will be carried out. The optimization of experimental variables influencing sensor selectivity and sensitivity as well as the transfer of the technology onto microelectrode arrays and sensing chips will be investigated. The applicability of the proposed method for field analytical monitoring will be carried out, and comparative studies with US-EPA test methods for evaluating solid wastes (SW-846) will be considered. The study is expected to assemble the basic chemical and biological information necessary to identify, characterize, measure, and therefore predict environmental pollutants by providing a cheaper alternative to environmental monitoring and assessment studies, and will significantly contribute to the protection of human health and the environment.
