Description:

The exploratory research described in this project deals with the development of a fully-integrated, physically and numerically consistent, regional-scale coupled atmospheric dynamics and chemistry modeling system. There are three major thrusts to the proposed research: (1) the development of the integrated meteorology, emission, chemistry modeling system; (2) the testing and evaluation of the system; and (3) the investigation and development of an RonlineS feedback methodology to account for direct radiative effects of atmospheric aerosols. The systematic development, and application and analysis activities, outlined in this proposal, will not only provide a detailed study of the quantitative impacts of the traditional "offline" chemical calculation methodology on predictions from air quality models, but also help alleviate several of the shortcomings of existing atmospheric modeling systems, and consequently reduce the corresponding uncertainties in model predictions. The development of the "online" feedback system would provide a basis for future regional climate studies where linkages between aerosol loading and cloud formation can be investigated. Further, the development of the proposed integrated system provides opportunities for its use as an air pollution prediction system to provide real-time forecasting of ozone air quality.
