Use of Multi-Scale Biophysical Models for Ecological Assessment Applications in the Southeastern United States

EPA Grant Number: R825157
Title: Use of Multi-Scale Biophysical Models for Ecological Assessment Applications in the Southeastern United States
Investigators: Huston, Michael A.
Institution: University of Tennessee
EPA Project Officer: Packard, Benjamin H
Project Period: October 1, 1996 through September 30, 1999
Project Amount: $1,697,104
RFA: Ecological Assessment (1996) RFA Text |  Recipients Lists
Research Category: Ecological Indicators/Assessment/Restoration , Aquatic Ecosystems

Description:

This multiscale landscape modeling and research program is based on the interactions of climate and geomorphology. Its objective is to predict the spatial temporal variation in hydrologic and microclimatic conditions that structure both terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, and form the template for understanding the consequences of anthropogenic and natural impacts on ecological systems. We will use integrated biophysical models to evaluate the predictable variability in fundamental indicators of ecosystem condition such as spatial and temporal variation in primary productivity; spatial variation in soil carbon and hydrologic storage capacity; and population size and dynamics of selected plant and animal species. The modeling will focus on three spatial scales in the Southeastern US: 150km2 with Oak Ridge National Laboratory Reservation serving as a prototype; 2000km2 with the Great Smoky Mountains National Park serving as a prototype and 150,000 km2 with the Southern Appalachian Region serving as a prototype.
