Sensors and Environmental Catalysts from Chemically Sensitive Interfaces

EPA Grant Number: GF9502101
Title: Sensors and Environmental Catalysts from Chemically Sensitive Interfaces
Investigators: Wells, Mona
Institution: Texas A & M University
EPA Project Officer: Lee, Sonja
Project Period: September 1, 1995 through January 1, 2000
Project Amount: $24,676
RFA: STAR Graduate Fellowships (1995) RFA Text |  Recipients Lists
Research Category: Academic Fellowships , Safer Chemicals , Fellowship - Chemistry

Objective:

The primary objective of this research is to synthesize and characterize novel chemically sensitive interfaces based on dendrimer chemistry for use in catalysis and sensing. The research will focus specifically on surface-confined dendrons such as polyamidoamine. The proposed methodology is to synthesize polyamidoamine surface-confined dendrons on Au and on TiO2. Subsequently, work on the two systems will advance in parallel, focusing first on inclusion of organic species into the structures as a function of branch size and dendron generation. Next experiments will deal with the effect of branch modification on inclusion and the effect of terminal group modification on molecular recognition. Finally, it is proposed that the research will focus on the spacing between surface-confined dendrons to see what the relative effect of cross-linking is upon inclusion and upon reactions/interactions of the included species with the substrate surface.
