Objective:
The National Center for Caribbean Coral Reef Research (NCORE) is a unit of the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science of the University of Miami. It is a "center without walls", designed to organize and lead multidisciplinary research in support of the improved management of coral reefs. It has a particular focus on the problem of coral reef ecological resilience, and aims to bring coral reef science and management capacity out of its primarily analytical status and into the realm of useful prediction. The objective of this proposal is to establish a National Center for Caribbean Coral Reef Research (NCORE). This center will foster interdisciplinary, process-oriented studies directed at answering fundamental questions regarding the function, health and sustainability of coral reef ecosystems in the Americas. With an initial focus on the Florida reef tract, the center will bring together scientific and management experts to identify critical scientific questions and approaches, develop research initiatives, facilitate acquisition of research funds and efforts, and communicate findings to the relevant agencies and public interest groups. The aims of the project have not changed from the original application.
