Description:
The lead poisoning of children is a serious public health problem. With EPA Phase I-II funds, NITON developed the XL, a lead paint analyzer using a patented L x-ray fluorescence method. The conclusions were that the silicon PIN diode in the XL is a superb detector for L x-rays and their L x-ray method works very well for surface and buried lead. They also concluded the current instrument should be complemented by an equally superb K x-ray detector for deeply buried and layered lead, and for 2 independent measures of lead concentration. In Phase II, they determined that Cd0.9Zn0.1Te is an excellent choice and they prototyped electronics and software algorithms. In Phase III, Niton proposes to complete the necessary hardware and electronics, test software algorithms, and commercialize a dual detector instrument. The cost of the instrument will be comparable to the current XL. This will yield a uniquely powerful lead paint detector to rapidly provide an assured decision based on 2 independent measurements. Their current customers tell them that the XL DD, with no substrate correction, no read-through problems, no deeply buried or multi-layered lead problems, will have wide commercial acceptance.Supplemental Keywords:
