Zero-Waste Dry Plating Commercialization

EPA Contract Number: 68D50158
Title: Zero-Waste Dry Plating Commercialization
Investigators: Sunthankar, Mandar
Small Business: IonEdge Corporation
EPA Contact: Richards, April
Phase: I
Project Period: September 1, 1995 through March 1, 1996
Project Amount: $300,000
RFA: Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) - Phase I (1995) RFA Text |  Recipients Lists
Research Category: SBIR - Pollution Prevention , Pollution Prevention/Sustainable Development , Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR)

Description:

Conventional electroplating is known to generate large quantities of hazardous waste. The alternative Dry Plating method eliminates liquid chemicals and recycles metals in situ without waste. This has been demonstrated using a batch plating prototype developed in the Phase II. In addition, zinc and cadmium coatings of acceptable quality and uniformity have been plated on batches of steel fasteners. This Dry Plating has been patented in the U.S. by IonEdge Corporation. As a result, the Dry Plating is ready for commercialization. The focus of this project is to test market the technology to a select group of customers in the fastener plating industry.

For successful implementation of the proposed plan, a business development firm, an equipment manufacturer and a plating shop will help IonEdge in this effort. The proposal describes the steps involved in product development and packaging for customers. Using the Phase II prototype, customer parts will be plated in quantities. cost of running this operation will be determined. Subsequently, future scale-up need such as throughput and pricing will be estimated. The data generated will be compared with customer expectations. Promotional methods will be used to market this information to the plating industry. Goal has been set for product sale in the targeted market segment. Successful completion of this project will provide IonEdge a platform for future growth.
