Description:
Coal-fired power plants are efficient but have high emissions of NOx and SOx. The NOXSO process, the most promising of the regenerable sorbent processes under development, uses a regenerable NaAlO2 sorbent to simultaneously remove both NOx and SOx. The process is being commercialized under the DOE Clean Coal Technology (CCT) Program and has excellent economics. During the Phase I project, a sorbent was developed with a unique structure that has the potential to absorb more sulfur than the current sorbent, which is made from very low-cost materials, and has excellent chemical stability and attrition resistance. This sorbent has the potential to further improve the process by reducing the parasitic power consumption, reducing the capital cost of the process equipment, and potentially reducing the cost of the initial sorbent load and the subsequent sorbent makeup costs. The Phase II project involves further improvement in the absorption capacity of the sorbent, scale up of the production methods, screening of the most promising sorbents in fixed bed tests, and conduct of fluidized bed tests on a large batch of the sorbent. The cost projections will be updated, and an economic assessment will be conducted. In Phase III, the sorbent will be tested in a real coal flue gas.Supplemental Keywords:
