Description:

Coal fired Gasifer Combined Cycles (GCC) have both high efficiency and very low emissions. A critical need for GCCs is a method of removing H2S produced from the sulfur in the coal from the hot gases. There has been extensive research on hot gas clean-up systems, focused on the use of a zinc oxide based sorbent (e.g., zinc titanate). Zinc titanate is the current sorbent of choice but is fairly expensive. The reasons are that the titania is expensive, and the sorbent can be used for only a few (less than 20) cycles before it falls apart.

TDA Research, Inc., has identified a new method to reduce the cost of the sorbent and increase sorbent life. They have developed the sorbent production method with a different type of sorbent (tin oxide). The new method produced pellets with an estimated average life of more than 200 cycles under hot gas cleanup conditions. The method should be directly applicable to preparing long life, low cost sorbents containing zinc oxide. This Phase I project will demonstrate that their process can be adapted to the leading sorbent (ZnO), optimize the sorbent composition, and measure cyclic life.
