Description:

In Phase I program, Faraday Technology demonstrated the feasibility of a novel approach to electrokinetic cleanup of contaminated soils. Specifically, the Phase I work demonstrated that the non-uniform pH profile can be eliminated by using 1) novel electrodes, and 2) periodic reverse current electric fields. Using these innovations, they demonstrated enhanced recovery of lead and mercury from contaminated soil samples.

In Phase II, they propose to demonstrate their innovative approach to electrokinetic soil remediation on a bench scale with synthetic soil matrix and on a pilot scale with real soil samples. The Phase II program will allow them: 1) to optimize the electrode pattern for field application; 2) to optimize the periodic reverse current waveform electric fields for increasedperformance; 3) to optimize the design of the electrode for higher surface area application at lower cost; 4) to extend the feasibility studies for moving the radionuclide contaminants in vadose zone soils; and 5) to extend the feasibility studies to simulated soils containing other constituents along with heavy metal contaminants.
