Photocatalytic AIR Cleaner for Indoor Air Pollution Control

EPA Contract Number: 68D00275
Title: Photocatalytic AIR Cleaner for Indoor Air Pollution Control
Investigators: Kittrell, J. R.
Small Business: KSE Inc.
EPA Contact: Richards, April
Phase: II
Project Period: September 1, 2000 through September 1, 2002
Project Amount: $225,000
RFA: Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) - Phase II (2000) Recipients Lists
Research Category: SBIR - Air Pollution , Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) , Air Quality and Air Toxics

Description:

Health effects of indoor air pollution are important because individuals spend large fractions of their time in indoor environments, and frequently have little control over exposure time or indoor air quality (IAQ). Cost-effective technologies particularly are needed for air cleaners with improved ability to remove gaseous pollutants, such as carbon monoxide, from indoor air systems.

The proposed research project is to complete the technical development of a photocatalytic Adsorption-Integrated-Reaction (AIR) technology, providing a system to destroy volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and other gaseous indoor air contaminants at ambient temperatures with compact units and at low cost. To accomplish this objective, the indoor AIR technology employs a new multicomponent photocatalyst that is much more active than traditional titania photocatalysts for dilute concentrations of contaminants in air. The program will utilize experimental studies of destruction efficiency on representative classes of VOCs, catalyst synthesis studies to identify the important multicomponent catalyst variables, and a competitive technology evaluation for a comparison of the Phase II technology relative to other alternatives. It is anticipated that an effective IAQ control concept will be commercialized, which will provide a cost-effective technology for cleaning VOCs and other gaseous contaminants from indoor air systems.

The commercial applications for the concept will be for controlling indoor air pollution by destruction of carbon monoxide, VOCs, and microorganisms in indoor ventilation air, for both government facilities and worldwide commercial and industrial sites. The technology will reduce indoor air pollution control costs, improve indoor air quality, and increase industrial and commercial productivity, thus enhancing economic competitiveness.
