Description:
Disposal of paint residue from aircraft depainting operations poses a problem as the polymeric paint contains toxic metal impurities. The metals (particularly chromate) cause the entire spent media and paint residue to be classified as a hazardous waste. The innovative approach described in the proposal deals with: 1) leaching of toxic metals into an aqueous phase by acid digestion; 2) combined removal of toxic metals by precipitation using an electrochemical step; and 3) electrodeposition from a mixed metal solution to form a chromium containing alloy. It is anticipated that acid digestion would detoxify the polymeric waste for disposal in a landfill. The process is novel because it both extracts the metallic impurities from the paint residue and then recovers the metals in the form of an alloy. In Phase I, bench-scale proof of concept studies will be carried out to demonstrate the principles of the innovation. This will provide the technical foundation to develop a lab-scale reactor to conduct parametric studies to obtain necessary data for scaling up the process, and validate the bench-scale results.Supplemental Keywords:
