Institution: George Washington University
EPA Project Officer: Aja, Hayley
Project Period: October 1, 1996 through September 30, 1999
Project Amount: $175,000
RFA: Technology for a Sustainable Environment (1996) RFA Text |  Recipients Lists
Research Category: Pollution Prevention/Sustainable Development , Environmental Justice , Sustainable and Healthy Communities

Description:

The objectives of this research include determining how the many design parameters, geometrical, aerodynamical, and mechanical, influence the performance of the pressure-exchange ejector. Due to the novelty of this device, no data base of information is currently available and one objective of this project is to establish such an information base. The fundamental research issue is how to combine these many parameters in a manner suited to capitalize on "pressure exchange". The approach will be experimental and computational. In the first two years, effort will concentrate on the pressure-exchange ejector. A series of prototypes will be designed, instrumented, and tested. Detailed diagnostics are expected to reveal how processes effecting the performance can be optimized. In the third year, a refrigeration system will be fabricated and tested and comparisons will be made with conventional technology. A computational model will be developed with the intention of providing improved understanding and guidance for the experimental effort.
