Trace Heavy Metal Removal from Drinking Water

EPA Contract Number: 68D5078
Title: Trace Heavy Metal Removal from Drinking Water
Investigators: Sarangapani, Srinivasan
Small Business: ICET Inc.
EPA Contact: Richards, April
Phase: I
Project Period: September 1, 1995 through March 1, 1996
Project Amount: $65,000
RFA: Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) - Phase I (1995) RFA Text |  Recipients Lists
Research Category: SBIR - Water and Wastewater , Watersheds , Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR)

Description:

New ideas are presented on the covalent attachment of chelating functionalities to novel, highly hydrophilic sobent material, which can then complex heavy metal ions irreversibly and is targeted toward lead removal. The efficient removal of other heavy metals, such as cadmium, chromium, mercury, zinc, nickel, cobalt, and cooper are anticipated. The covalent attached ligands are expected to be stable towards hydrolysis and pH variations. The capacity of the chemically modified sorbent materials will be evaluated for the above mentioned heavy metal ions in the presence of calcium and magnesium ions and for simulated water samples. The sorbent material and the eluted water samples containing multi-elements before and after sorption will be examined by sensitive analytical methods.
