Description:
This project will help address harmful environmental trends through continuous phytoplankton monitoring and bi‐weekly shellfish sampling. The data will be used to create advisories for shellfish harvesting at three sample locations on the Kodiak Road System and participating villages. Objective 1 is to restart monitoring shellfish for paralytic shellfish toxins (PST) bi-weekly and collect weekly phytoplankton samples. Objective 2 is to increase knowledge about harmful algal blooms (HABs) and biotoxins in Kodiak waters and provide data to residents on the harvesting of shellfish in the Kodiak region. Objective 3 will allow KANA to educate Tribal members about an adaptation practice— “Harvest and Hold.”
