Description:
This SBIR Phase II proposal provides a sustainable solution for two major environmental challenges in the agriculture and building industry. In the agriculture industry, swine manure treatment is a major problem, both environmentally and economically. Currently, more than 120 million hogs being produced in the US per year, generating more than 6 billion gallons of swine manure that must be treated. More than 90% of swine manure is stored in lagoons – resulting in health and environmental problems – the remaining is being sold to farmers as fertilizers – with added costs to the hog farmers to store and deliver it. From the construction industry, approximately 10 million tons of Post-Consumer Tear-Off Scrap Shingles (TOSS) and 1 million tons of Manufactured Waste Scrap Shingles (MWSS)are being generated in the United States annually, around 9 million tons of which are being disposed of in landfills every year. Our technology addressed these problems by producing a bio-based rejuvenator to revitalize the oxidized roofing shingles. This allows using scrap roofing shingles as a supplementary source of asphalt binder. The BR2S is a revitalized form of scrap shingles which is palletized and can be introduced to asphalt. The palletized nature of the BR2S will further eliminate the spread of dust and fibers cause by current application of shingles in asphalt plants
