Objective:
Hotels consume a significant amount of water in the United States and around the world. Most hotels do not monitor individual guest water usage and as a result, millions of gallons of potable water are wasted every year by hotel guests. The proposed work aims to develop a commercially viable wireless device for monitoring water use from hotel guest room showers. This device will be based on the existing prototype and will be designed to fit most new and existing hotel shower fixtures and will wirelessly transmit hotel guest water usage data to a central hotel accounting system.
Progress Summary:
Based on our work, we have fabricated and assembled an initial working prototype of our device using CAD software and 3D printing technology. While we have faced setbacks in our original goal to develop a completely self-powered water monitoring device, we have a built an all-in-one device capable of wirelessly transmitting water monitoring data with the help of a rechargeable battery connected to the device’s generator. The upcoming months will mostly be spent improving the data quality being reported by our device and the battery life of our overall system.
