Objective:

This research project involves eight universities and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Mid-Continent Ecology Division. The project will identify, evaluate, and recommend a portfolio of multi-scaled environmental indicators relevant to the coastal regions of the U.S. Great Lakes basin. Our goal is to determine which environmental indicators will be the most efficient, economical, and effective measures for the condition, integrity, and long-term sustainability of the Great Lakes basin. Our objectives are to: (1) identify environmental indicators that define the condition, integrity, and change of the ecosystems within the basin; (2) test these indicators with a rigorous combination of existing data and field data to link stressors with environmental responses; and (3) recommend a suite of hierarchically-structured indicators to guide managers toward informed management strategies.

Progress Summary:

The focus of the first year was on a pilot study for each of the project components and the development of a rigorous sampling framework. Pilot study sites included areas of Lakes Superior, Michigan, and Ontario coasts; data from these efforts allowed refinement of sampling methods and the generation of variability estimates to allow for more efficient data collection during 2002-2003. Development of our sampling framework included the compilation of over 200 data layers of existing information across the Great Lakes coastal and watershed regions. These data layers were organized in a geographic information system for each of over 700 segment sheds and form the basis for study site selection for intensive field studies in 2002 and 2003. Each component has been adhering to and refining its quality assurance and quality control objectives. Overall budgets are on target and several adjustments are being implemented as minor changes in field sampling protocols are refined and study area logistics finalized.

Future Activities:

A probability sampling framework has been developed for the U.S. Great Lakes coastal region based on the identification of disturbance gradients using information on land use, shoreline disturbance, soil characteristics, human population density, and point and non-point sources of pollution. Project components will sample 20 to 300 sites (depending on the component) spread across the coastal zones of all five Great Lakes during these two field seasons. Evaluation and reconnaissance of potential study areas will take place during spring of 2002. Intensive field sampling will occur during the spring and summer of 2002 for the selected study sites. Coordination of site selection and fieldwork is ongoing with the U.S. EPA Mid-continent Ecology Division. Their efforts are anticipated to include more intensive data gathering on aspects of water quality, habitat diversity, and wetland characterization. An associated study funded by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) on remote sensing will aid in gathering information for the interpretation of indicators. We will continue our outreach to stakeholders through our Web site and via presentations at national and regional meetings to increase awareness of this research and its products. All state and national agencies that are potential stakeholders will be sent a CD-ROM explaining this project and the resulting indicators.
