Objective:

The Center for Air Toxic Metals ® (CATM ®) Program is focused on conducting research directed toward minimizing the impact of air toxic metals on the environment by administering a practically oriented multidisciplinary research, development, and training program on the formation, behavior, measurement, control, and minimization of potentially toxic metal emissions from energy conversion systems through partnerships developed with industry, government, and research organizations.

Objective/Hypothesis :

  • develop key information on air toxic metals behavior, state, and fate for risk assessment/control/risk management;
  • develop/test/validate sampling and analysis techniques;
  • enhance use of existing control technologies;
  • identify/develop new, more effective control technologies;
  • demonstrate new and existing technologies;
  • develop empirical and theoretical predictive techniques;
  • optimize utilization options and safe disposal of by-products;
  • educate students and raise public awareness;
  • evaluate the health impacts/implications of air toxic metals; and
  • develop, test, and commercialize technologies through partnerships with industry.

Specifically, the research projects funded under this award will:

  • further develop a fundamental understanding of mercury transformations in coal combustion flue gas environments;
  • develop methods to improve measurement of mercury and chlorine in combustion flue gases;
  • develop mercury control technologies;
  • model mercury interactions on activated carbons and evaluate other sorbents and additives;
  • study mercury–selenium interactions in aquatic ecosystems;
  • investigate mercury and carbon-based sorbent reaction mechanisms; and
  • undertake the development of methods for halogen speciation measurements in combustion systems.

Approach:

The overall approach of the CATM Program is to conduct basic and applied scientific-based research that provides answers to critical questions related to air toxic metals, emissions from industrial sources, and development of control technologies that can be applied by industry to control emissions. Advanced and proven sampling and analytical methods are developed, tested, and used to further characterize air toxic emissions and to develop a better understanding of the fate and formation of air toxic metals throughout industrial processes.

Expected Results:

These activities, which both EPA and industry believe are extremely important, will continue to develop a better understanding of air toxic metals formation, transport, fate, measurement, control, modeling, and health effects and, on an ongoing basis, will expeditiously provide up-to-date information that will benefit industrial, government, academic, and public sectors.
