The development of comprehensive models for analysis of environmental equity requires the integration of multidisciplinary fields such as land use planning, urban and environmental models, geographic information systems, demographics, community-based planning, risk assessments, theories of justice, environmental law, and civil rights law. Understanding environmental equity dynamics and causation is important for public policy decision making. This research will integrate a multiperspective and interdisciplinary approach in the evaluation of current environmental equity analysis models. The objectives of this research project are to: (1) examine the debates and controversies of current methodologies; and (2) attempt to develop a comprehensive model that could address the scientific and social issues of environmental justice.


If environmental justice assessments are based on flawed methodologies, then inappropriate corrective actions could have significant public policy impact without improvement of environmental quality. In this research, the siting of environmental burdens will be analyzed in relationship to land use and demographic patterns. The influence of benefit-cost analysis, risk assessment, or environmental laws on urban environmental planning will be evaluated.
