The objectives of this research project are to: (1) demonstrate and quantify the potential of aquatic plants in assimilating nutrients, metals, and toxic organics, while considering the engineering management of constructed wetlands.; The goal is to(2) address the diversity and complexity of technical issues involved including geochemistry, biology, and hydrogeology,; and through field work(3) demonstrate empirical and theoretical aspects of cost-effective wetlands engineering through field work.


The research plan will involve both laboratory/ and bench-scale microcosms, as well as field-scale mesocosms, to investigate phytoremediation pollutant removal mechanisms, and assess process efficiencies. In order tTo obtain a correct and effective interpretation of biomonitoring results, several studies will be conducted to determine uptake/release kinetics. Environmental factors including illumination, temperature, and other physiochemical characteristics will be analyzed. A mass balance approach will be used to determine removal amounts;, and harvesting rates and loading will be monitored and examined.
