The objective of this project is to develop a Personal Cascade Impact Sampler (PCIS) for particulate matter (PM) that will separate airborne particles by size and allow for analysis of the particles toxic metal content. The sampler contains tiny filters, which collect sufficient material for gravimetric analyses, analyses of the toxic metals inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), and inorganic ions by ion chromatography (IC) techniques.
This project was initiated by the Center in October 2000, under a previous EPA grant (Grant No. R824834C008). Efforts to develop the PCIS will continue under this follow-on grant. The proposed PCIS will be a miniaturized cascade impactor, consisting of four impaction stages and one after-filter stage . The sampler will operate with the help of a high efficiency personal air pump. One sampler unit will be developed as part of this grant.
We expect to develop a personal sampler for PM that will allow the separation of airborne particles by size. This will improve analyses of the particles to broaden scientific understanding about the toxic metal content of PM.
