Estimating the quantity and quality of liner leakage from waste containment facilities can be a difficult task. A reliable computer model for the prediction of leachate resulting from waste facilities would be a useful tool.

This investigation presents an approach consisting of three independent computer models to determine the liner leakage and transport of contaminant from a waste facility to a point of compliance. The Hydrological Evaluation of Landfill Performance (HELP) model is used to estimate the quantity of leachate generated within the liner system. A modified liner leakage model, UNOLEAK, is used to determine the leakage from the liner system and a contaminant transport model, the Horizontal Plane Source (HPS) model, is used to determine the fate and transport of contaminants from the bottom of the liner.

A parametric study for liner leakage was conducted in developing the UNOLEAK analysis. Two-dimensional, three-dimensional, and a three-dimensional analyses with interface flow were reviewed. The results of the parametric study indicated that the three-dimensional analysis with interface flow provides a higher leakage rate and more closely approximates field conditions. Interfacial flow was used in the development of the computer model and subsequent studies. The computer model was calibrated with data from two waste facilities. Results indicate that the model shows promise for estimating liner leakage and contaminant transport from waste containment facilities.

Status: All tasks are completed. The results of this investigation have been published and presented in the 3rd International Symposium on Environmental Geotechnology, San Diego, CA, June 10 - 12, 1996. The final Center report will be completed in the Fall 1996.
