Performance ceramics (electrical, electronic, and electromechanical ceramics) constitute the largest market segment (80%) among advanced ceramics materials. The industry produces and sells more than $10 billion of ceramics products each year. Consumption is projected to increase by more than 20% of adjusted gross revenues through the early 2000s. The ceramic industry continues to use traditional synthesis and processing techniques for performance ceramics that necessitate the use of environmentally undesirable solvents and additives in large quantities. This project involves an environmentally benign process to produce value-added ultrafine performance ceramics. The Phase I effort successfully established the proof-of-concept that it is possible to produce ultrafine (nanosize), performance ceramic powders using this solvent-free process, which is significantly more benign in its environmental impact. During Phase II, the environmentally benign process will be integrated and optimized to produce ultrafine (nanosize) performance ceramics. Detailed experimental work will be performed on commercially value-added nanostructured performance ceramics. Prototype devices will be made from the produced performance ceramics to help initiate commercialization efforts.
