RFA: P3 Awards: A National Student Design Competition for Sustainability Focusing on People, Prosperity and the Planet - Phase 2 (2019) Recipients Lists
Research Category: P3 Awards , P3 Challenge Area - Air Quality
Objective:
The project team objectives are to design a catalyst for removal of oxides of nitrogen (NOx), carbon monoxide (CO), and particulate matter (PM) from a small off-road engine used in lawn and garden maintenance. By improving air quality, PanCeria is making positive efforts to improve the longevity and continuous improvements to the planet, to people, and to prosperity of life.
Phase II objectives are to design and build a cost-effective device geared toward keeping small engine machinery in compliance with air quality regulations. The design from phase I suggests a 5% Cu/CeO2 catalyst. The removal efficiency for each pollutant by the device will be carefully evaluated and feedback into further iterations of the control device. Objectives including improving the activity and longevity of the device.
Progress Summary:
The team reviewed the Phase I research results and put forward an aggressive strategy to build the next prototype; interface the engine/device/emission bench; and calibrate the emission bench system. The team was formed, trained on all experimental methods and laboratory methods. All needed parts were ordered and initial catalysts were calcined. The program unfortunately came to an immediate halt when Governor Newsom of California issued a stay-at- home order to reduce the spread of COVID-19. Since that time, the University has not permitted (do to State and local guidelines) undergraduate to return to campus.
Future Activities:
The program is effectively on hold until we are allowed to have undergraduate students return to the campus research labs. The program manager has been contacted and is aware of the current challenges.
