Use Of Continuous Measurements Of Integral Aerosol Parameters To Estimate Particle Surface Area

This study was undertaken because of interest in using particle surface area as an indicator for studies of the health effects of particulate matter. First, we wished to determine the integral parameter of the size distribution measured by the electrical aerosol detector. Second, we wished to investigate if the three weightings (number, surface, and volume) of the accumulation mode could be recovered by converting continuous measurements of three integral parameters: charging current of the electrical aerosol detector, number concentration from a condensation particle counter, and light scattering by an aerosol mass monitor.
