Abstract

EPA is releasing the draft report, Toxicological Review of Tetrachloroethylene (Perchloroethylene), that was distributed to Federal agencies and White House Offices for comment during the Science Discussion step of the IRIS Assessment Development Process. Comments received from other Federal agencies and White House Offices are provided below with external peer review panel comments.

Tetrachloroethylene (perc) is a chemical solvent widely used in dry cleaning, metal degreasing, the manufacture of some consumer products and other chemicals. It is a prevalent groundwater and drinking water contaminant, is present in hundreds of Superfund sites, and has been detected in the air in and around dry cleaning facilities and nearby residences.

Impact/Purpose

Tetrachloroethylene is a chemical solvent that is widely used for dry cleaning of fabrics, metal degreasing, and in making some consumer products and other chemicals.

Status

This assessment has been loaded into the IRIS Web site and Database.

09-Jan 2009NAS held their second external review meeting to discuss the draft peer review report on Jan 29-30, 2009, in Washington DC.
11-Apr 2009NAS announced a third external review meeting to discuss the draft peer review report on Apr 2-3, 2009, in Irvine, CA.

13-Aug 2011EPA hosted an interagency science discussion on the review of the draft Toxicological Review and draft IRIS Summary for Tetrachloroethylene (Perchloroethylene).
14-Oct 2011EPA hosted a second interagency science discussion as follow-up to the August discussion.
15-Feb 2012EPA released the final IRIS Toxicological Review and IRIS Summary for Tetrachloroethylene (Perchloroethylene), and the Interagency review draft, the interagency review comments, and EPA's response to major interagency comments.
