Notice

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) announced the release their final report, Review of EPA's 2022 Draft Formaldehyde Assessment, which provides recommendations for improving its draft IRIS assessment. [NASEM Press Release Notice: Aug 9, 2023]

Abstract

In April 2022, EPA publicly released the draft formaldehyde assessment for review and comment. The IRIS Toxicological Review of Formaldehyde-Inhalation provides the scientific support and rationale for the hazard and dose-response assessment of inhalation exposure to formaldehyde. An independent external scientific peer review managed by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM), under contract with EPA was completed in August 2023.

Formaldehyde is present in a variety of products including plywood adhesives, abrasive materials, insulation, pesticides, and embalming fluids. Major sources of anthropogenic emissions include household furnishings and building materials, motor vehicle exhaust, manufacturing plants that produce or use formaldehyde or substances that contain it (e.g., glues), and tobacco smoke.

Impact/Purpose

The draft Toxicological Review of Formaldehyde-Inhalation Assessment provides scientific support and rationale for the hazard and dose-response assessment pertaining to inhalation exposure to formaldehyde.

Status

In April 2022, the assessment was released for a 60-day public comment period. An independent, external scientific peer review managed by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM), under contract with EPA, was completed in August 2023.
