Provisional Peer-Reviewed Toxicity Values (PPRTVs)

Provisional Peer-Reviewed Toxicity Values for Dichloroethylene, Cis-1,2-

Provisional Peer-Reviewed Toxicity Value (PPRTV) assessments support the EPA mission to protect human health and the environment by identifying and characterizing the health hazards of chemicals of concern to the Superfund and RCRA Programs, and providing an important source of toxicity information and toxicity values for such chemicals. PPRTVs [provisional oral reference doses (p-RfDs), inhalation reference concentrations (p-RfCs), cancer risk values, and screening values] are derived after a review of the relevant scientific literature and using Agency methodologies, practices, and guidance for the development of toxicity values. Other EPA programs or external parties who choose of their own initiative to use PPRTV values are advised that Superfund resources will not be used to respond to challenges of these PPRTVs used in a context outside of the EPA Superfund Program.

Impact/Purpose

A Provisional Peer Reviewed Toxicity Value (PPRTV) is defined as a toxicity value derived for use in the Superfund Program.  PPRTVs are derived after a review of the relevant scientific literature using established Agency guidance on human health toxicity value derivations.  All PPRTV assessments receive internal review by a standing panel of Center for Public Health and Environmental Assessment (CPHEA) scientists and an independent external peer review by three scientific experts. The purpose of this document is to provide support for the hazard and dose?response assessment pertaining to chronic and subchronic exposures to substances of concern, to present the major conclusions reached in the hazard identification and derivation of the PPRTVs, and to characterize the overall confidence in these conclusions and toxicity values.  This document is not intended to be a comprehensive treatise on the chemical or toxicological nature of this substance.

History/Chronology

Date Description
01-Oct 2022EPA published the final report and values on the PPRTV website.
02-Sep 2022EPA finalized and delivered the assessment to the Superfund Program. Screening subchronic and chronic p-RfCs were derived in the 2022 assessment. A subchronic p-RfD was derived in the 2011 assessment.
03-Feb 2011The old assessment for cis-1,2-Dichloroethylene was archived and a new assessment was added to the PPRTV database. An RfD assessment was added.
