EPA is releasing a revised database, developed under contractual agreement, containing values of human physiological parameters specific to older adults obtained from published scientific literature. The information assembled in this database should provide a scientific basis for selection of several key physiological parameters for dosimetry modeling in older adults.

EPA is releasing the external peer review comments for the draft document, Inhibition of the Sodium-Iodide Symporter (NIS) by Perchlorate: an Evaluation of Lifestage Sensitivity Using Physiologically Based Pharmacokinetic (PBPK) Modeling (External Review Draft). The draft report was used as supporting material for the Preliminary Regulatory Determination on Perchlorate in October 2008.

EPA invites the public to comment on the preliminary list of "in vivo mammalian dose-response citations for 2,3,7,8 tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD)". This list was compiled as a first step in the development of EPA's response to the National Academy of Sciences comments (NAS, 2006) on the dose-response assessment presented in the Exposure and Human Health Reassessment of 2,3,7,8-Tetrachlorodibenzo-p-Dioxin (TCDD) and Related Compounds (Dioxin Reassessment, EPA, 2003). On October 14, 2008, an external peer review panel workshop was hosted by an independent contractor on the Toxicological Review of Carbon Tetrachloride (External Review Draft). Completing this review, a final report of the comments from the workshop were collected and is now available.

EPA is announcing the availability of the electronic Report on the Environment (eROE or ROE), an online site that provides access to the environmental and human health information contained in the EPA's 2008 Report on the Environment (EPA/600/R-07/045F), released May 20, 2008, and in the EPA's 2008 Report on the Environment: Highlights of National Trends, released September 24, 2008. The ROE provides answers to important questions EPA has asked about the condition of our nation's environment and human health over time. The National Center for Environmental Assessment Staff have prepared this handbook to provide information on various physiological and behavioral factors commonly used in assessing children's exposure to environmental chemicals. Children have different exposure circumstances than do adults. Understanding these differences is key for evaluating potential for environmental hazards from pollutants. EPA is making version 2.1 of BMDS available at this time for public beta testing. Version 2.1 includes a beta (external peer review) version of a new time-dependent toxicodiffusion model for continuous outcomes (Zhu et al., 2005), incorporates graphical plots for the continuous exponential models and allows for the use of individual animal continuous response data.

EPA is preparing an Integrated Science Assessment (ISA) as part of the review of the National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) for Ozone (O3. This is intended to update the scientific assessment presented in the Air Quality Criteria for Ozone and Related Photochemical Oxidants (EPA 600/P-05/004aF-cF), published in February 2006. Interested parties are invited to assist the EPA in developing and refining the scientific information base for the review of the O3 NAAQS by submitting research studies that have been published, accepted for publication, or presented at a public scientific meeting. EPA is announcing the release of an update on the questions and answers that provide general information about dioxins, a complex subject. The materials presented here provide information about the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) 2003 draft risk assessment on dioxins (also called the dioxin reassessment) and the 2006 recommendations by the National Academy of Sciences. In addition to background information, these materials discuss possible effects of dioxin exposure in humans, include advice about consumption of food that might contain dioxins, and explain the review process for the dioxin reassessment before it is finalized.

EPA is announcing the availability of a new tool called "WEPPCAT" developed through an Interagency Agreement with the ORD/NCEA Global Change Research Program.

WEPPCAT is an online tool that provides a flexible capability for creating user-determined climate change scenarios for assessing the potential impacts of climate change on sediment loading to streams using the USDA's Water Erosion Prediction Project (WEPP) Model. In combination with the existing capabilities of WEPP for assessing the effectiveness of management practices, WEPPCAT also can be used to evaluate the effectiveness of strategies for managing the impacts of climate change.

EPA annouces that NCEA's BMDS Web site has been updated with BMDS version 2.0. This update employs a new, markedly improved user interface and has enhanced batch processing capabilities. In addition to updates made in version 1.4, this version also includes a Hill model for dichotomous responses, which allows an asymptote at less than 100% response rate, and new versions of the familiar quantal models which implement alternative background terms (background additive to dose).

The training consists of five narrated sets of slides covering (1) Introduction to Benchmark Dose Modeling, (2) Modeling Dichotomous Data, (3) Modeling Dichotomous Cancer Data, (4) Modeling Continuous Data, and (5) Modeling Nested (e.g., Developmental) Data. This course is a narrated, online representation of EPA's 1-day Benchmark Dose Training course with examples using BMDS version 1.4.1c.
