In some states, this is a one time fee and in others it is an annual fee. In exchange, they receive a vanity license plate promoting the cause. A designated nonprofit organization receives a portion of proceeds from the sale of these specialty license plates.

Generally, it requires legislative approval and an upfront administrative fee to defray the cost of the license plate design, development, promotion, and distribution. The state administers the program for the nonprofit skills, and in-kind assets that may not be represented in your board or staff.
