Description:

Verification testing of the Aquionics, Inc. bersonInLine® 4250 UV System to develop the UV delivered dose flow relationship was conducted at the Parsippany-Troy Hills Wastewater Treatment Plant test site in Parsippany, New Jersey. Two full-scale reactors were mounted in series. The influent challenge water was piped directly to the first reactor, which contained a flow modifier inserted at the entrance flange. Each lamp module consisted of six high-output, medium-pressure mercury lamps oriented horizontally and perpendicular to the flow. The verification test was designed to evaluate disinfection for water reuse based on two types of water; (1) granular or fabric filtered secondary effluent (55% transmittance), and (2) membrane filtered secondary effluent (65% transmittance). MS2 bacteriophage was used as the test organism. Five flow rates were tested for each transmittance, with each flow rate tested in quadruplicate. The delivered dose was calculated using the dose-response calibration curve developed from thirteen dose-response tests using the collimated beam procedure. The relationship between delivered dose and flow rate was calculated for each transmittance based on the lower 75% confidence interval, and presented in graphical and equation format. Headloss through the lamp modules was measured and the velocity profile was measured to document the hydraulic profile of the system. Power consumption was determined at 100 percent power. Data collected for scaling the system to larger flow applications was presented in the final report.
